Contrast & Concord Typeset Booklet

The goal of this project was to typeset a summary of the work of Carl Dair alongside images of collected vernacular type in booklet form. Images of found type were sourced from SFSU fliers, local businesses and train yard graffiti to catalogue a mixture of structured and freehand letterforms. These letterforms were narrowed down to a complete alphabet based on their contrasting and concordant qualities.
The next phase was experimentation and exploration through pairing of letterforms. Both concord and contrast were carefully examined in the categories of size, weight, structure and form in order to understand the design relationships between them and create a visually interesting pairing. Possible typefaces for the booklet were also compared to discover the most interesting, yet legible, pairings for the text.
Moving on to the typesetting phase involved creating a grid that would accommodate square images, as well as a composition that would allow for versatile conformity in the flow of the body text. A balanced asymmetrical composition was chosen to create both contrast and concord in a single spread, which remains consistent throughout. The title of each section was treated as an interaction of the letterforms with their meaning; for example, the "Contrast of Size" page is titled with letters that are in concordance for structure, weight and form, but are overly large and in contrasting sizes. This continues the theme of contrast and concord by creating a system where the title of each section is a contrasting surprise to the concordant composition of the type.
